Perfect Dark: untitled

This story takes place in the year 2022. This is to allow for a bit of flexibility, essentially meaning it won't be entirely cannon in accordance with the events of Perfect Dark Zero and Perfect Dark.

The story will follow the events after Perfect Dark Zero and will include a few things from the two books, Perfect Dark: Initial Vector and Perfect Dark: Second Front (The sequel to Initial Vector).

It does not include the events of the N64 game Perfect Dark which takes place in 2023.


The backstory:
The year is 2022, dataDyne is still the worlds largest corporate super power, but due to events in 2020, they are quickly losing that title.
Its medical company pharmaDyne, was found responsible for the deaths of 37 million people, most of which were in Canadian, through the "accidental" release of the "SuperFlu" known as H22N17.

dataDyne has gone down hill since the efforts of Joanna Dark and the Carrington Institute brought these events into the light.
They are now striking back... not at Joanna, but at the public as a whole.

Only one person can stop dataDyne.

If only the they knew where she was...

Background/History: Joanna Dark was as a eager bounty hunter, a raw talent with laser-sharp reflexes, reckless streak a mile wide, and a flair for sniffing out trouble. Joanna is capable of deep, destructive anger, and often lacks the discipline to keep her temper in check, which leads her to undertake reckless, ill-advised actions. Despite this, she is also extremely gifted and adaptable, and this frequently gets her out of dangerous situations.
Growing up in the shadow of her father, Joanna was trained from birth to be self-reliant; this makes it nearly impossible for her to easily trust someone else, particularly since her youth was spent helping her father chase crooks, hoodlums, liars, and thieves from one end of the globe to the other.
Despite a childhood that could best be termed 'eccentric' - most adolescents don't catch crooks with their fathers - she is remarkably well-adjusted and content to live each day as it comes. Trained by Jack but untested outside of HoloMan-VR, Jo is desperate to demonstrate her talents, as much to herself as to her father

Her father was killed by the hands of dataDyne, something she has never gotten over even with her being successful in ruining dataDynes reputation.

Being on the run takes a lot out of you... it doesn't help when your constantly haunted by nightmares... nightmares of things that no normal person could live through... funny thing about that is... I am normal... I don't have super powers or any of that comic book stuff... but it doesn't explain how I'm still alive.
I noticed I was beginning to run out of clothes to wear, that was last week.
I also noticed I was starting run low on cash, and since I stopped taking bounties I no longer had a source of income.
All I had to my name was the clothes I was wearing and my Falcon pistol... and my name. I have to admit... its not much... but it could be worse.


I don't know what time it was when I woke up... I knew it was early.
I sat on the bed in the hotel room I rented for atleast ten minutes before getting up and deciding to check out.
Once that was out of the way I hit the road again.

I had no idea where I was going, but I knew it was time to leave Tokyo.

I left Tokyo and found myself on a 2 hour flight to Toronto.

Once I arrived, I checked into a middle class hotel for the night... atleast this one had a shower.

When I was coming out of the shower I heard someone on the stairs... just my luck. I grabbed my Falcon off the bathroom counter. I came back out into the hallway to be greeted by a dataDyne shock trooper who was halfway up the stairs. dataDyne ShockTroopers are the best of the best... the elite members of dataDyne's CORPSEC security forces. They only get deployed when dataDyne wants something really bad.


I fired off 2 shots and rolled across the hall... entering the bedroom just as he began to shoot... the bullets never met there target as they hit the walls, scattering bits of drywall across the floor.

I shut the door and jumped over onto the bed just as he began shooting at the door, sending wood splintering across the floor.
I fired back using the rest of the Falcons clip... silence... then he hit the ground.

I was about to open the door to grab his weapons when the door flew open, the knob hitting my right elbow.
"You should really knock first?"
He answered "Miss Dark, I am under direct orders from dataDyne CEO DeVries to bring you in."
"Your gonna have to catch me first."

He came at me... but I was faster.
I swung my right leg behind his right, bringing him down... but he wasn't alone.

I felt the butt of a shotgun hit me in the ribs... breaking two I think.

I recovered quickly, feinted with my right kick, which he fell for, and nailed him in the right side with my left.
He buckled and fell onto one knee and finished with my right, connecting with his face.
He fell back landing back first in the doorway.

I rolled back away from the door as another came through.
As soon as he saw me he started shooting... most of the bullets missed... but not all.
I felt a sharp burning pain as 2 or 3 hit my leg, and one hitting my right shoulder.
I lunged forward at him, taking him down... just as he pulled a knife.
The knife stabbed into my left leg as I hit him... the motion of our bodies snapping the blade off at its base... leaving it in my leg.

He thought he had me there... but he was wrong.
As the blade went into my leg I went for his sidearm at the same time and had it out once the blade was in.

I rolled off of him... momentarily disoriented by the pain in my leg.
He began to get up but I managed to fire off two shots from what I realized was a DY357 Magnum... the one gun I hated using.

As he fell to the floor a grenade bounced around the corner.

"Shit!"

Out of pure panic I jumped for the window... not the best idea considering I was on the second floor.

I flew out the window... and as luck would have it... landing on the roof of a car.
As I hit the car I could hear my right shoulder buckling under pressure... it broke.
Using the momentum from the fall I managed to roll off the top the car, down onto the hood and then onto the ground.

I tried to get up... and I did... until another two bullets hit my left leg...
The shock troopers were going to get me for sure.

I wasn't positive, but I could guess that they were either going to kill me or they were going to take me to dataDyne's HQ... where they would interrogate me first... then kill me.
I hope they just kill me... less pain.

So I layed there on the ground in front of a car... waiting for them to get me.
But they never did.

I could hear gunshots... one of the shock trooper approached me... only to have his head taken clean off by a shot from what could only guess was a Jackal sniper rifle.

Then there was silence... the kind of silence that makes you sick to your stomach.
The silence was broken however, not by more gunfire but by a voice calling my name.

"Jo!"

Jonathan? Why the hell was he here.

"Jo! Can you hear me?!"

He attempted to lift me but my scream of pain protested his action.

"Damn it! I need a stretcher and a medic over here now!"



That was the last thing I heard before everything went black.
I could feel my body being moved but I wasn't awake to protest... to tell them that I was ok... to tell Jonathan to stop worrying about me... to stop being so overprotective.

Comments: Its a good thing we sedated her. I've never seen someone with this many injuries still willing to fight.

I have no idea how long I was out... or when I arrived back at Carrington Institute, I only knew I was back at Carrington because the old man himself, Daniel Carrington was in a chair beside my bed when I finally woke up.

"Well, look who's finally back amongst the living."

All I could manage was a painful groan.

"You had us worried Joanna, if it wasn't for Grimshaw... you wouldn't be here."

He must have seen the look of surprise on my face.

"Yes, Grimshaw has been monitoring there communications for awhile now. He intercepted a call stating that they had located you and were moving in for retrieval.
I sent Jonathan in... just in time from he tells me."

He paused for a moment, scratching at his salt and pepper beard.

"A second floor window is hardly an appropriate means of escape... though it must have worked because... well here you are."

He paused again, looking at me. Worry and lack of sleep written all over him.

"Now go back to sleep... I think I'll do the same."

Then he left.. and I went back to sleep... back into the nightmares about my father... playing over and over like a broken record.

My mind finally had enough of the nightmares and woke me up.
Someone had opened the blinds, the sunlight was flooding the room.
I tried to move my right arm to shield my eyes from the sun, but the only response I got was a sharp stab of pain through my right shoulder making me gasp.

I shut my eyes against the light.
When I reopened them, Dr.Cordell was standing at the end of the bed and a nurse was behind him.

"Good to see your finally awake Jo, I'd ask how you feel but I can probably take a pretty good guess."

I tried to speak but couldn't, my throat was too dry for that.

He must have seen my discomfort because the nurse was walked to the side of the bed holding a glass of water.
I took the glass with my good arm and downed the entire thing and shivered as the cold water woke me up, rehydrating my throat.

My voice was broken and rough when I spoke.
"How long have I been out."
"About two and a half days."

This didn't surprise me.

"You were only unconscious for about a day, you've slept the rest of the time... not that I blame you." He laughed a little, it was low but it was still a laugh.

"I'm kinda hungry."
"Of course, what would you like?"
I get to choose?
"A burger would be nice... make it two, with a coke or something."
"I'll have a nurse send it right up."

He flashed a quick smile then left the room, the nurse following him.

Ten minutes later the same nurse came in with two cheeseburgers and a coke on a tray.

"Here you go Miss..."
"Please... call me Jo, I hate when people Miss Dark"
"Very well, your 2 cheeseburgers and coke as you asked Jo."
I smiled "Thanks."

She checked, then double checked the IV's and left the room... leaving the door open a crack.

I vaguely noticed the catheter when I was talking to Carrington... whenever that was.
They must have taken it out though because it wasn't there.

This was going to be fun... I had to go to the bathroom.

It took a lot of effort... and pain, but I finally managed to sit up and get my legs over the side of the bed.

Thats when I noticed the walker at the side of the bed.
I ignored and tried to stand, my ankle said otherwise and made me sit back down.
Damn, guess walking under my own power is out of the question.

I tried to get up a second time, shifting my weight onto my left leg. It protested with pain but it wasn't as bad as my right.
I finally managed to stand and grabbed the walker for support and made my way towards the bathroom.


It took about three minutes to make it to the door of the bathroom, which was on the other side of the room. Why do they put the damn bathroom on the other side of the damn room?

I left the walker outside and shut the door. Once I was finished I splashed some water on my face and left the ridiculously small bathroom.
I took the walker and slowly inched my way back towards the bed.

Carrington was waiting for me, sitting in a chair at the end of the bed.

"How are feeling Jo?"
The look I gave him was enough for him to know that was a stupid question.
"Sorry... I'm just worried, we all are."
"I appreciate the sympathy."
"I'm sure you do."

I finally got back to the bed, its soft mattress was practically yelling at me to lay down on it.

"looks like your not the only crippled one around here
I shot him a mischievous.

He laughed.

"Thats true, but not for long. Yours is injury where as mine is old age."

I tried to laugh but the pain was too much, I let out a small gasp.

"Sorry."
"You don't have to be sorry... I'm the one who jumped out a second floor window."

He laughed, I tried but but it hurt too much.

"Its good to see your feeling a little better, but I have to go... dataDyne's trying to get into our network again... were on full alert at the moment."

I nodded, suddenly feeling too tired to do anything else.

He smiled and left.

I went back to sleep... again.

The sun had set long before I woke up again.
The nurse was at the side of the bed checking the IV.
"What time is it?" My voice sounded horrible.

She handed me a glass of water.
"Its three in the morning Joanna, go back to sleep."

I would if I wanted to, but I was wide awake... and I didn't feel like watching the same nightmares over and over.

I downed the entire glass of water before telling that I couldn't.

She was turning to leave when I stopped her.
"Could you get someone to go to my room and get my laptop?"

She nodded and left.

When I woke up again it was early morning.
Looking around the room quickly I saw my laptop on the table beside the bed.

Reaching over with my left arm I grabbed, managing to get it on to the bed without letting it fall.

I flipped it open and turned it on... atleast its quick,
my mind only had about 5 seconds to wander before the Carrington Institute logo popped up followed shortly after by the log in box.

I entered my password and clicked on the Internet logo, and looked up the recent world news... the situation with dataDyne was getting worse.

*Fast forward 2 weeks*

The good part is I could walk now... the bad part is that my ribs were still in the process of healing.
I hate feeling so useless.

I've been hearing rumours that we were getting a new operative, but the wasn't much about details.

I think Jonathans been avoiding me... I haven't seen him once since he rescued me.

... interesting.

*2 Months Later*

They didn't want me doing anything until I was back to 100%... it took 2 months of sitting around and doing nothing while more Institute agents and Mercs lost there lives.

"Joanna... Carrington wants to see you in his office."
"Did he say why?"
"No, just that he wants to talk to you."

It was what I was waiting for... clearance to return to duty... atleast I hope thats what the old man wants.

Carrington's estate is the second largest building on the institute grounds.
I can't even imagine how much it cost to make it... the exterior design is modern Roman with giant stone columns along the front. Once you go through the mahogany and oak front doors, your greeted by the gigantic front lobby.
The floors here are dark marble with silver between each tile, a giant fountain of the Carrington Institute emblem made of lighter coloured marble sits in the middle.

On the other side of the fountain is the red oak staircase that takes you up to the second and third floor. Carrington's office is on the second floor overlooking a giant waterfall... my room is on the third.

I took the stairs to the second floor and went through mahogany double doors that led in to the entryway of his office.
His secretary Amanda was at her desk.
"Oh hello Joanna, Mr.Carrington stepped out for a minute."
"I assumed he was waiting for me."
"He is but he was called out shortly before you arrived."
"Did he say what it was about?" "No... only that DataDyne is making another move to takeover CoreMantis."

It was at that moment that Carrington entered the room, followed by Jonathan and a new guy.

"Ah good your here, Joanna this is Ryan Anderson our new operative he..."
"I don't mean to be rude but did you really bring here so you could introduce a new agent to me?"
"Yes actually I did Joanna, because he will going with you to Mexico."

*CoreMantis Omni-Global was one of DataDyne rivals.

DataDyne used to be the largest hyper-corporation in the world, until the events surrounding the "Super-flu".
After the previously mentioned events, DataDyne saw a sharp decline in all sectors and CoreMantis inevitably took the position of largest hyper-corp.

DataDyne, obviously angered by this, has gone in to a state of "self-destruction".
The efforts of Joanna Dark and the Carrington Institute has labeled them as the number target.
But they know that the Institute will not launch an offensive unless provoked. Due to the Carrington Institutes close business partnership with CoreMantis, DataDyne is using them to get to Carrington.*

"Mexico?"
"Yes, DataDyne is pressing hard on Core-Mantis... they've requested our help."
"So whats the plan then?"
"You will be going with Ryan... Jonathan is going with our newest female agent Nikki Taylor."

*In the armoury*

"No offence Ryan but you'd better be able to hold your own out there... I hate baby sitting new agents."

He didn't seem to take offence... I couldn't tell if it was a good thing or not.
"Do you really think Mr.Carrington would send two fresh rookies in to a covert operation like this, especially with his two best agents?"

"Point taken, just try not to get in my way too much alright?"

He nodded and holstered two P9P's and slung a FAC 16 over his shoulder.


I on the other hand holstered two Magsecs and put my Data-Thief in the pouch on my belt.

I felt Ryan's eyes on me.

"I prefer traveling light."

These are the bios for the two new agents I introduced.

Distinguishing Features: Has three scars from gunshots on his right leg(2) and 1 that goes through his left shoulder.
Years with Carrington Institute: 0 - Hes a new agent
Backstory/History: Served on the Toronto Metropolitan Police Force as a S.W.A.T. Sgt. for 5 years before retiring from the force due to emotional/ family problems.
Ryan is cocky at times and doesn't always see that there is always a better way of doing things.

Gender: Female
Blood Type: A positive
Height: 5'10"
Appearance: Medium length blonde hair, Brown eyes, light tan.
Distinguishing Features: Small tatoo of a Chinese Dragon on her right hip
Years with Carrington Institute: 0 - Shes a new agent.
Backstory/History: Served 3 and a half years with the LAPD prior to recieving a call from Carrington as a "Person of special interest."
Nikki was one of the best female sharpshooters on the LAPD.

I grabbed some ammo and, with Ryan behind me, I went outside to the landing pad... our dropship was waiting for us.

"Were dropping you 5 miles from the objective, stealth is key in this operation."

"Whats the objective?"

"You are two retrieve the Core-Mantis President, once you have her we'll send you the coordinates for the extraction."

"Anything else?"

"DataDyne is gonna be all over that building, but we have confirmed civilians in the area so watch your fire. Core-Mantis officers will assist you in getting past security and your to meet with there head of security at the location on the map."

"Alright then... let's do this."


After a final flight check, the dropship was in the air.

There were three dropships altogether.
A select group of Carrington's best were in the first, Jonathan and Nikki were in the second, Ryan and I were in the third.


Jonathan's voice buzzed through the radio.
"Welcome to the Soloman Islands, more specifically... New Georgia Island. We're 10 minutes out from Hovoro, check your gear and be prepared... intel is sketchy at best but we do know that dataDyne is here."

Ryan double checked his rifle while I simply glanced down at my holstered Magsec...

Then everything went black.
