In 2186, humanity and the other Citadel races were nearly destroyed.

Their destruction was nearly heralded by: Reapers, a sentient race of machines responsible for cleansing the galaxy of all organic life every 50,000 years. The races of the galaxy were forced to rally behind a single human soldier, and after great sacrifice, the Reapers were finally wiped out.

Now, one year later, the Mass Relays have been destroyed, all artificial intelligence has been wiped out, and governments have collapsed. Isolated from each other, surviving systems across the galaxy are struggling to survive. Resources are scarce, and those remaining are fought over.

Horizon, once a lush, green farming planet, has been reduced to an unforgiving desert. The former military presence established during the Reaper War has been reduced to stragglers. From their ashes, a powerful and corrupt warlord has risen. But some individuals have taken it upon themselves to try and find hope on this desolate world.

And now, the fate of the galaxy may depend on these brave explorers...

I grunted in discomfort as I tried to remained crouched down in the sand and what passed for shrubs around here. Horizon had degraded greatly in the past year; where there once must have been fertile dirt with crops planted now was only course, irritating sand. Reminded me a little too much of home. Although we couldn’t completely blame the Reapers for it. People could be just as bad as the machines…they were just a lot less efficient about it. Within months they began to organize into factions, and from there they began to kill each other…with the civilians caught in the crossfire.

We were taking it upon ourselves to shoot them back.

It was dark, but that only made it easier to see our goal; a large compound illuminated by a series of large floodlights. Surrounding it was a large gate that ran all the way around the compound all nice and home-y like. I could see several shadows moving on top of it.
I felt a shift in movement on my right and I glanced at it, recognizing the lightly armored human scout that had the job of elaborating what we had to expect first.

“Black Sun’s compound. I’m seeing… Four… No, make that five hostiles on the gate. One sniper on that tower behind it.” a young human soldier reported behind her high-vision binoculars.

Black Suns. A collection of former Blue Suns mercenaries, among other low-lifes, figuring branding themselves with a new name makes them any less shootable.

“The target’s beyond it, right?” I asked in a low, grumbly voice.

“Right. In that large compound. The Black Sun’s are using it as a store house for food. Making the civilians pay high for it,” the scout explained, “Behind three-meter steel walls and a bunch of armed thugs. How are we supposed to get through that?”

I grabbed the binoculars from him and looked through them awkwardly; they were obviously designed for people with eyes on the front of their heads. Still, I managed to position them good enough that I could see a small panel close to where the gate would open. A toothy smile spread across my lips. “Let me worry about the gate. These guys…” I motioned to the small group of armed former soldiers and mercenaries crouched behind me, “Will worry about the guards.”
The scout looked back as well and sighed; but at least it was a hopeful sigh. Hopefully after this they could go on with a little more of that hope. Me? I was going to be satisfied so long as I got light someone on fire.

I unclipped a small, roughed up data-pad from my bandolier and grinned at the others. “Think you guys can draw their fire a little better this time while I knock? I don’t wanna get my damn hump shot at again.”

“Think you guys can draw their fire a little better this time while I knock? I don’t wanna get my damn hump shot at again.” I managed to crawl beside Chrom when he finished his sentence, almost taken aback at the comment, "It was ONE time, besides I was sort of...inebriated at the time." I smacked a button on the side of my helmet a few times, trying to get it to zoom in at the compound, "I'll try not to make a habit of it, also, I couldn't help but notice you had some spare parts that would be useful to making this! Damn! Thing! Wo-", one more smack the helmet finally made the visor functional again, as the compound focused into view, everything seeming closer and clearer.

The Human soldier's scouting report was accurate, five guards at the gate, a sniper inside that wretched nest of his and who knows what else inside beyond the wall. We had to get these supplies out, there was too much in the storage for them to be ripping civilians off, who already had next to nothing in their names. Now, I wasn't sentimental often, but a lot of food their way meant a little for us...and some.

My gaze turned towards the sniper, who happened to be a Turian clad in rather heavily plated armor, considering his role. Made sense, seeing as how his post was rather bunkered up with concrete walls and netting. All he had to worry about was shooting hostiles, not run around like those annoying Pyjacks.

"Chrom, we don't have a strong enough sniper rifle to take that guy out in one shot and he'll be an issue if he stays alive," I motioned my hand towards one of the soldiers, "although, I have a proposition." A Batarian approached between Chrom and myself, a rather large case in hand. With a big, ugly looking grin, he opened it up to reveal its contents. The paint may have been chipped and faded, with rust spotting the weapon, but nevertheless it was a still a good ole', Alliance manufactured, working Cobra Missile Launcher. "I'll take some of the Mercs with me, I think we can cause a mighty fine raucous, while dealing with that nest!"

Once again, my gaze drifted to the flood lights illuminating the compound, "We can take out those floodlights too, hopefully nobody here minds working in the dark?" I said with grin, thinking about the impending operation that was about to unfold.

I shifted over a little uncomfortably while the Batarian moved between me and Sinn. Krogan were never meant to be crouched down this long; my legs were aching and my blood boiled with anticipation. Luckily, the sight of a Cobra missile launcher provided a pleasant distraction.
“Heh-heh… That should do it. The rest of the guys here can watch my hump. And as for the lights…” I unclipped another object from my bandolier; a pair of visors that I clipped to my head. Pressing a button, the blue lenses lit up a little.

“The rest of you, make sure your helmets’ vision enhancers are working. If not, hang back and wait for the truck. Once I get the doors open, I’ll signal them to move into the compound. They’re waiting close by,” I explained.

“Hopefully this one doesn’t blow up like the last one…” the human scout from before murmured to herself.

“I upped the armor plating on this one myself. She won’t go down easy,” I explained to her, “Once we’re inside, the food should be in its own warehouse. Won’t take long to load it up as long as the driver is as good as he thinks…”

I took another glance at the compound; the scout made a good point about the truck’s survivability. It would be able to shrug off typical small arms fire easily…but heavy weaponry would be a little more of a problem. Hopefully the Black Suns were having as much trouble as us finding working weapons. Still, we couldn’t afford to wait – the colony was going to starve if we didn’t get those supplies.
“Alright, my plates are itching from all this waiting around. Sinn? We’ll wait for you and your team to take out that nest. Everyone else? Stick with me and get ready to pile in after the truck goes in.”

I scanned the terrain on the east side of the compound, looking for a good vantage point to start the assault. There was a rather nice cluster of large boulders about 75 meters away from that side of the compound, which the sniper's nest was closest to. It had a solid perch for us to take a shot from as well as solid cover.

"Well then, Drotin, Cid, Anderson, and Vona, you're with me," I motioned to them to get their equipment ready, "Alright Chrom, we'll draw them away. Soon as you blow that gate we'll start jumping over the compound from the side, get some of that heavy fire off of you. Hopefully, that driver knows what the hell he's doing."

I patted him on the back before moving myself away from the rest of the group. Following my lead was a rather quiet Batarian, two Humans and a Turian with a rather foul stench. The path we followed was silhouetted by casting shadows, wild dead shrubbery and large stones. No one would see us or hear us, until we wanted it so. It took us about 6 minutes to get to our position and ready ourselves.

"Drotin, get the missile ready, everyone else, get some dispersion. We're going to set up a defense and distract them until the truck makes its move." I pulled out the Revenant that was holstered to my back, checking it over before aiming down my sights .
"Sinn, shouldn't we uh...you know, take care of the other guards too?" My head cracked back, eyeing Anderson, a fresh, less than stupid Human rookie that decided he wanted to make a 'difference'.

"No, you're going to give Drotin here all your ammo and instead go on the radio and tell us how fabulous we're doing," I smacked him on the back of his head, a faint whimper escaping his lips, "Dumbass!"

The Batarian let out a short lived cackle before finally aiming his Cobra at the sniper tower, "Ready when you are boss." I nodded at Drotin before bringing my hand up for a countdown, good thing I only had three fingers anyway. I opened up my comms to everyone else, including Chrom and the soldiers left behind,  "Fire in 3...2...1."

A loud whistle bellowed through the valley and compound, a trail of orange glowing smoke leading from my position all the way towards the tower. This was definitely going to be an interesting night.

Elsewhere

Geneva Settlement

Geneva, what a piss hole. Sure its all well and good that its inside a downed Alliance Cruiser but what good is it when the kuso (damn) tub will never be among the stars again. Hell, none of us ever will.
I remember when she went down. Geneva was running evacuation for Horizon, like suddenly the Alliance cared about a planet on the edge of Alliance space. One of those Reaper beams nearly tore the entire cruiser in half. By time she hit the ground it was clear this was the final resting place.
Funny part in all of it is that I was scheduled for transfer to the Geneva before the Reapers arrived.

Suppose its safer in here though. Horizon has changed so much in the past year. Like it died along with the Reapers somehow. Or maybe its just because after losing one enemy we started fighting ourselves instead.

"Kas, you're up in five. Sturgess is already up there waiting on you, good crowd too."
Varn, my Krogan handler. He means well but really he's just in it for a good ration deal from the Black Suns. Can't have the prized fighter of Geneva going off and getting killed.

About damn time.

PostSubject: Re: Mass Effect   Mass Effect I_icon_minitimeFri Mar 31, 2017 10:04 pm

I watched the sniper nest explode with a brilliant combination mixture of red fire and smoke. I knew full well what mercenaries were capable of with explosives, but the sight it still made my hearts race. Of course, that also meant no more standing around for us.

“Price, Bask, watch my back. I’m going in!” I called out to the two humans behind me.

I slid down the rocky hill and sprinted as fast as I could to the doors. It didn’t take long after the missile detonation for the guys inside and Sinn’s men to engage one another. At least that diverted attention away from me…for once.

“No one’s interested in the gate. You’re lookin’ good, Chrom,” I heard Price, the human scout from before, whisper to me over the comm.

“I’m always looking good, Price,” I chuckled in response.

I felt along the side of the metal structure my fingers hit an indent - an access panel. I ripped it off, causing several wires to hang out. Just what I was looking for. I grabbed the two wires I needed and plugged them into my datapad. The gizmo lit up in response to the interaction.
At least fancy tech was easy to deal with these days; used to be that compounds like this had VI’s to stop any hacking attempts, but whatever Shepard did seemed to wipe out any VI’s or AI’s pretty indiscriminately. My datapad beeped, signalling the hack was done. I was in the system. I guess it was a good thing I was so good at-

“Chrom! You got one coming on you nine o’clock!” Price warned me through my comm. Sure enough I heard the foot steps of someone on my left.

“Hey! Whadd’ya think your-!” the Black Sun trooper began before I grabbed the Carnifex off my belt and put three bullets into him. The body collapsed to the ground, but the damage had been done.

“Sinn!” I called out over the communicator, “Doors are about to come down, and I guess we’ll be taking some of the heat off ya’too. You can thank me later!”

I switched my communicator to another line. “Alright, Kren, I’ve opened her up for you.”

“Heh-heh… I’m ready to give her a right-good deflowerin’,” a low, exciting voice replied. Sick bastard. I just hoped he could actually do it.

It only took a minute before a low rumble to shake the ground and, in the black night, two piercing white lights flashed. Suddenly, the roar of the engine blasted my ears and I watched in horror as the truck blew past me, missing the still-opening doors by inches.
“Crazy son of a bitch.” I cursed under my breath, able to hear a roar of laughter even over roaring engines fill the compound. I peeked inside the gates to see a large, armored truck drift around a corner, spraying some confused mercenaries with a face-full of dirt and rock, effectively burying them. Remarkably, the crazy driver finished his slide right in front of a large warehouse. A large, grizzled-looking Krogan stepped out of the vehicle.

“What’re you waiting for!? An invitation!?” he boomed.

I sighed and raised my fingers to my comm. “Sinn… Truck’s in. We’re gonna start loading it up now.”

The two human scouts from before finally caught up to me, and I nodded towards both of them in understanding. It was time to get to work.

Mass Effect Empty
PostSubject: Re: Mass Effect   Mass Effect I_icon_minitimeWed Apr 05, 2017 2:18 am

A bright flash of orange and red, followed by a billow of smoke lit up my visor, how magnificent! There was honestly an odd beauty to wanton destruction. The tower collapsed in on itself, with some rather large pieces of debris shooting through the walls around it, making small openings. "Drotin, you never fail me you son of a bitch!" He cackled in response, putting the missile launcher back into its case, a visible steam coming from the barrel.

"Alright folks, everyone is going to wait on my first shot before we engage them, they'll be pouring out like the roaches they are shortly," I held a tighter grip on my Revenant, taking in a deep breath. Drotin and Cid spread farther to my right, while Andersen and Vona moved down the left, waiting like a pack of Varren. The Black Sun troops started to pour out, coming down to a slower pace as they started to form a perimeter, searching for whomever caused the explosion. There was no shortage of races in their group, plenty of Humans, Salarians, Turians and Asari to satiate our appetite. Hell there were even a few Krogan waltzing around, had to be extremely careful with them.

Let's do this I activated my omni-tool, a few hundred nanites shooting out of my gauntlet like a locus swarm. They flew to their intended targets, spreading amongst the group of now confused mercenaries. Their arms flailed around, trying to swat away them, but the damage was already done, their shields and defenses failing, 'infected'. I jumped over the boulder, firing my revenant into the crowd, bullets impacted them like a drill. Some of them had horrifying looks as I appeared towards them; maybe it was because of my unnatural size or possibly the warcry that was bellowing from my helmet. Whatever it was, gave me a rush, two Humans hitting the deck like rag dolls...my first victims.

Following my lead were my other companions, firing from my right and left sides, like fine tuned machinery. We were met with returning fire, the sound of cracking bullets surrounding us. My Tech Armor began to light up, protecting me from death. Surprise was on our side, and boy did it work well as the enemy began to dwindle. An Asari appeared on my flank, launching a biotic orb at me like a rocket. My reflexes were still up to par thankfully, as I ducked just in time to avoid the impact. I returned the favor, firing a biotic shockwave from my hand towards her, a blue fissure flying at her like a runaway train. It hit her like one too, as the Asari flew back into her teammates like a bowling ball, knocking her out. I grinned, this was definitely going to be one for the books.

"Sinn! Doors are  about to come down, and I guess we’ll be taking some of the heat off ya’too. You can thank me later!” Chrom came over the net over all the noise. I did notice some in the back starting to make their way back into the base, towards the gate.

"Well thanks," I stabbed a Batarian trooper in the chest with my omni-blade, his body falling to the ground before I sprayed my revenant into his head, "It would be nice if some these Krogan joined your party!"

We continued fighting, it felt like an eternity before Chrom came over the net again, "Sinn… Truck’s in. We’re gonna start loading it up now.” I turned towards the fighting crew by my side, "Alright! Let's move in, we need to cover them as they load up the truck! Let's go!" We started to push in, gaining ground, but just like all good things, it came to a hault.

A flash of blue lit up my screen as I flew back what felt like a few meters, before a boulder stopped my body from going further. Had to catch my breath, get back up, see who the hell hit me. Well, shit. An armored Krogan was my assailant, an aura of biotics emanating from him like a dying blue star. He was larger than your average Krogan, his growl reverberating like a wild beast, kind of made me nervous actually, but exciting never the less!

"Drotin! I'm gonna need some help here, the rest of you make your way towards Chrom, give him some cover fire!" I reloaded my rifle, while my shields and tech armor lit back up...it was time to get dirty.

“Blasted doors!” I cursed as my fingers worked to rig the warehouse doors to open. The security on the doors was a little older than I was used to; too old to use my hack tool to crack. Had to open it manually, which wasn’t fun during quiet times, and even less so when some angry mercs were shooting at you!

“How’s that door lookin’, Chrom? We’ve shaken the nest, and the bugs are gonna start swarming soon,” Kren asked me while he fired from my right side, providing me with both cover-fire AND literal cover.

“Don’t get your quads in a twist, it’ll be open soon!” I growled back.

An explosion went off a little too close for comfort, causing the two humans that were firing from the truck to almost fall over. I hated fucking mercenaries. Them and their bloody grenades!
I connected to different colored wires and grabbed a third, plugging it directly into my omni-tool. I plugged in some numbers and sent a specific charge of electricity into the doors. They gave a satisfying click and began to open. Magnificent.

“That’s it!” I shouted, and turned to the two human soldiers firing from the truck, “You two! Start loading it up!”

Whilst the two soldiers got to work, Kren and I took cover behind the truck. Kren would lean over the side and fire from his M96-Mattock; for a half-blind Krogan he was a helluva shot with the damn thing. I fired a couple times to try and keep a few pinned behind cover. Then an approaching squad caught my eye.
“We got company coming from our nine o’clock!” I shouted to Kren. He told me to go fuck myself and that he was busy. Asshole.

I waited until the group of Black Sun thugs intending to flank us got close. They knew I knew they were coming, and their fire was pretty heavy; luckily my shields an armor kept me from getting any extra holes. Firing at them a few times before rolling my back to the truck to take cover again, I knew they were close enough. Activating my omni-tool, I held it there while the device began to cycle power and a charge.
“Kren, kill your shields!” I yelled to him.
“Why the fuck would I wanna do that!?” he shouted back to me, before taking an eye off his targets and seeing what I was doing. “Oh…”
“Idiot…” I growled, but a wide grin formed across my face. Just a little bit closer…

My omni-tool began to spark and crackle with power, and I could hear the foot steps coming towards us even over all the firefights breaking out around us. I held up my fully charged omni-tool past the side of the truck and in front of the approaching squad, and released the power. Suddenly, multiple streaks of blue lightning flashed and surged out of the omni-tool, arcing towards the merc’s shields and striking them square in their chests. The overload of power caused the electricity to jump from soldier to soldier who still had their shields, or other sources of power, and left them stunned, vulnerable, and in a lot of pain.

“Worked like a charm,” I chuckled out and stepped away from the truck. Several of the soldiers were still incapacitated from the Overload, and those who had recovered still had electricity sparking across their armor. I held up my omni-tool again let loose a bright torrent of flames, igniting the ones who were still standing. The combination of the electricity and fire caused any unlucky bastard hit by both to detonate with an electrical explosion.

It was fucking beautiful.

The dozen soldiers who noticed the explosion and were showing up to avenge their comrades? Not so much.

“Damn it!” I shouted as I got back behind the truck to avoid a hail of slugs. It was a good thing the truck was as armored as it was. I was about to radio Sinn for some back up, but I noticed a fresh wave of reinforcements suddenly appear to give us some much needed cover fire. Kren shouted some profanity in regards to not needing any help from a bunch of squishy aliens. I could only laugh.

“Chrom!” I heard one of the humans shout to me from the warehouse, “We got all the supplies loaded up, and…”

“Good! Get your asses in the truck and we can get the hell out of here!” I shouted back between firing a couple rounds towards a group of thugs.

“…and a bunch of explosives,” the human continued after I finished cutting him off.

I paused. “How many?”

“A lot.”

“Do we have room for them on the truck?”

“I’d say about half.”

A devilish, fanged grin spread across my face. “Perfect. Load up what you can…and leave the rest for me.”

While the two got to work, I brought up Sinn on my communicator. “Sinn! We’re finished here…and these guys left us a little bonus gift with the supplies. Get everyone out of here! We’re gonna blow everyone here up!”
